Bakaaboto Nature Resort
The paradise on earth where your rest is Guaranteed!
BAKAABOTO NATURE RESORT is located south of the Brokopondo Reservoir, in the Sipaliwini district on the Upper Suriname River. This resort is situated directly at the basin of the Bakaaboto Rapids, also known as Bakaaboto-Sula.
Approximately 185 km by car from the capital city, Paramaribo, this nature resort is directly accessible. The facilities are “back-to-basics.“
However, there are day-guest tents, chairs, and cooking utensils for rent, toilet groups, and cabins with beds for overnight stays, with or without indoor baths & toilets. Visitors can also rent tents for overnight stays.
In addition to natural beauty and fascination, the local residents greet you with their African-tinged cultural expressions and customs.
The Apeesina Waterfall is located slightly south of Bakaaboto, just a stone’s throw away, and is ideal for a motorboat excursion as a kind of jacuzzi attraction. You can also hike back and forth to this waterfall via a forest path with a guide. A combination of walking and boating is also an option.
Heading north along the river, again by motorboat, you can reach the Brokopondo Reservoir within an hour. By camping on a remaining hilltop, you can enjoy swimming in the clear crystal waters of the lake for about an hour.
This attractive part of the Bakaaboto activities package can also include a pre-arranged fishing trip.
The region in which Bakaaboto Nature Resort is located is called “Bataliba” and also includes five traditional tribal villages: Duwata, Bëkyooköndë, Baanafoowköndë, Baikutu, and Pikipada.
More than 2,000 Saamaka tribal people live in Bataliba. These people practice self-sufficient agriculture, hunting, and fishing for their own consumption; surplus from their efforts is sold for commercial purposes to interested parties, such as tourists and entrepreneurs who earn their living in and around the Brokopondo Reservoir.
There is a primary school and a clinic at Bakaaboto, as well as a telephone mast for telecommunications purposes on-site at Bakaaboto. All of this has been established by Walther R. Sanné, CEO & Founder of Bakaaboto Nature Resort
